January Muse-ings: 2024

With the new year comes a renewed sense of inspiration for my creative intrigues, aspirations, and moodboards. From revisiting old photos with fresh perspectives to collecting new, novel musings on various social platforms, January always feels like a good time to take inventory of what’s catching my eye.

This year, I find myself especially drawn to wooden interiors, particularly those with plenty of natural light and Japanese-inspired elements.

Australian artist Kane Lehanneur frequents my saved folders. His paintings have this beautifully worn, sun-faded quality about them that evokes a sort of nostalgic, hard-to-put-into-words type of feeling for me.

Artist chops—also called hanko or name seals depending on where you are—have been a musing of mine for quite some time now. I actually went as far as sourcing a Japanese business to hand-carve one for me. Then I hand-carved one myself. Then I decided neither of the two were quite “me” (oh well). Perhaps this year I’ll stumble upon my signature stamp.

More Kane Lehannuer—this time the Flower Beds I daydream about someday having in my home.

Grainy black and white photos—especially those with a vintage, West Coast feel and the female form.

And last but never least, Artist Sarah Darling (also Australian—maybe I need to visit?) completes this year’s moodboard. Similarly to Kane, her colorful compositions tend to speak to me in a special, can’t-quite-put-my-finger-on-it type of way. I often refer to her work as a north star for my own pieces.
